Yolo County still does not have a plan to divest from the economic and social structures that are killing our planet and furthering inequality and debt.
We have no targets set or plan for decarbonization, despite the consensus of international climate scientists saying we need to act now or face severe consequences.
It is for these reasons that we are proposing a Yolo County Local Green New Deal 🌱
A Local Green New Deal 🌱does not simply address the problem of greenhouse gases, it addresses the ROOT ISSUES that lie behind both the climate crisis and the crisis of an economic system that wasn’t built for the majority of us. (Read about my vision for a Local Green New Deal 🌱 here: http://bit.ly/LocalGND)
Extraction, that is turning natural resources into dollars, is regularly applauded as “good business” yet has pushed our planetary boundaries to the limit.
Clean water, clean air, and healthy ecosystems have taken a backseat to economic privileges for the few.
Renters know what it’s like to pay 50% or more of our hard-earned income to a landlord every month.
A society oriented to single families hasn’t created space for cooperation and prioritization of affordable childcare.
Labor unions and worker cooperatives are regularly suppressed.
These are just a few examples. They are not just county-specific, but we are still deeply invested in life-destructive economies and infrastructure here in Yolo County.
We aren’t here to dwell on everything that’s wrong. We are here to change it. To take action and collaborate across every sector of society to create a healthy, vibrant, and compassionate Yolo County and planet. To envision a more beautiful world and to go out and create it.
—>We are far from the only local grassroots movement with these motivations and our movements will be front and center in American elections and on the ground doing the work in 2020<—
I am hopeful because I have seen living examples of these types of circular and life-supporting economies. I have seen communities and humans who have learned to live in-line with planetary health. It is possible. And it happening right now.
Is it going to be difficult? Most definitely. But I know this community is aware of the detriments of the alternative. I know this community cares.
I have met hundreds or thousands of people in this journey of running for office that also believe in a brighter future. This campaign was inspired by those who are out there not just talking about, but creating the future we want to live in.
Let’s take this to the next level, have courage, and decide as a collective We the People of Yolo County that we demand change and a healthy future, and that we are here to participate in it!
All the best,
